What Is K9 Guarding

Dog & Handler — A Recognised Deterrent for Commercial Sites.

K9 security pairs a trained security dog with a fully SIA-licensed handler. A visible dog handler presence is frequently cited as a deterrent on commercial sites — the sight and sound of a working dog can give pause to individuals considering unlawful activity.

Our K9 handlers are expected to operate under strict welfare and professional standards. Where possible, each dog is carefully matched with its handler and trained for specific roles — from general patrol and perimeter security to more specialist applications.

Explosives & firearms search specialist search dogs for high-threat environments and events
Crowd control & event security licensed handler presence at concerts, festivals, and public events
Mobile K9 patrols vehicle-based handler teams covering multiple sites or large estate perimeters
Full welfare compliance all dogs trained, housed, and cared for in strict accordance with NASDU and BIPDT standards
K9 Deployment Process
01
Threat & Site Assessment

Our K9 operations team assesses your site, identifying entry points, high-risk zones, and the appropriate dog discipline patrol, detection, or a combination of both.

02
Handler & Dog Team Selection

We match the right breed and training level to your requirements. Handler credentials, dog certification, and welfare records are provided in advance.

03
Site Familiarisation

Before first deployment, the K9 team walks the site learning its layout, scent environment, and any specific operational restrictions.

04
Active Patrol & Search Operations

Regular, unpredictable patrol routes are conducted throughout each shift. Detection searches are carried out on request or as per post instructions.

05
Reporting & Ongoing Review

Every shift produces a detailed patrol log. Any incidents, finds, or concerns are documented and escalated. Performance and dog welfare are reviewed monthly.

Our Standards
Accreditation & Welfare

All K9 teams operate under NASDU (National Association of Security Dog Users) and BIPDT standards. Every dog is regularly re-assessed, veterinary-cleared, and welfare-monitored. Handler-dog teams train together on a regular basis.

NASDU BIPDT ACS Approved Welfare Compliant
Our Working Dogs

Welfare Is Part of the Standard.

Every dog we deploy is assessed for welfare before, during, and after each shift. Condition, temperament, and readiness are checked at every stage — not just at annual certification.

Before Every Shift

Condition, health, and readiness verified before any deployment begins — every team, every time, without exception.

Throughout the Operation

Handlers are trained to monitor welfare continuously and are empowered to stand down any dog showing signs of stress or fatigue.

After Every Deployment

Post-shift welfare checks are mandatory. A fit, well-cared-for dog is a more effective security asset — and the right thing to do.

All dogs housed, trained, and cared for in strict accordance with NASDU & BIPDT standards.

Service Features

What Our K9 Service Covers.

From the breeds we deploy and the handlers we select, to the welfare standards and reporting we follow.

01
SIA-Licensed Handlers

All handlers deployed by Britannic Security are required to hold a current SIA Security Guard or Door Supervisor licence. Each undergoes BS7858 vetting and additional K9 handler training aligned with NASDU standards prior to deployment.

02
NASDU & BIPDT Certified Dogs

Our dogs are certified by the National Association of Security Dog Users (NASDU) and the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers (BIPDT). Certifications are maintained through continuous training and regular re-assessment.

03
Unpredictable Patrol Routes

Unlike fixed patrols, K9 teams follow varied, unpredictable routes throughout each shift preventing any behavioural pattern that a sophisticated intruder could exploit. Every patrol is different. Every area covered.

04
Specialist Detection Capability

Our detection dogs are trained to assist in identifying narcotics, explosives, and firearms. Detection searches can be carried out on request or as part of a scheduled programme covering vehicles, premises, lockers, and events.

05
Mobile K9 Response Units

Our mobile K9 units operate across multiple sites from a single vehicle ideal for businesses with several locations or large estate perimeters. Our rapid response units aim to reach your site promptly following an alarm activation.

06
Detailed Patrol Reporting

Every K9 shift generates a comprehensive patrol log recording routes covered, areas searched, any finds or incidents, and handler observations. Reports are provided digitally and can be integrated with your existing security management system.

Common Questions

K9 Guarding FAQ

Do your handlers need to be SIA licensed?
All K9 handlers deployed by Britannic Security are required to hold a current, valid SIA Security Guard or Door Supervisor licence. In the UK, any person carrying out a licensable security role — including dog handling — must be SIA licensed. This is a requirement we take seriously across all deployments.
What is NASDU certification?
NASDU is the National Association of Security Dog Users the leading body setting training and welfare standards for security dogs in the UK. NASDU certification means both the handler and dog have been independently assessed and meet the professional standards required for commercial security deployment. All our dogs are NASDU certified.
Can K9 teams detect both drugs and explosives?
Yes, though detection dogs are typically trained and certified for specific scent profiles. We have teams trained for narcotics detection, explosives detection, and combined programmes. When you enquire, we'll match the right certified team to your specific detection requirement whether that's a one-off search or an ongoing programme.
Are your K9 dogs dangerous to members of the public?
Our security dogs are trained and regularly assessed to work within controlled parameters. General patrol dogs are trained to bark and alert rather than to attack unprovoked. Handlers aim to maintain control at all times, and all dogs are assessed for temperament suitability prior to deployment. We endeavour to select breeds and individual animals based on both their capability and their suitability for operating in public environments.
Can you supply K9 teams for events?
We may be able to supply K9 handler teams for concerts, festivals, sporting events, private functions, and corporate events. Our event K9 teams are experienced in crowd environments and can be combined with manned guarding or door supervision to deliver a complete event security solution.
How quickly can you deploy a K9 team?
For planned deployments, we aim to assign, brief, and deploy the appropriate K9 team within 24–48 hours. For emergency or short-notice requirements, we endeavour to mobilise on-call handlers as quickly as possible. Contact us directly on 020 3432 0603 to discuss urgent requirements.
Are K9 teams compliant with the Animal Welfare Act?
Dog welfare is a core priority in all our operations. All dogs are aimed to be housed, fed, exercised, and cared for in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Shift lengths, rest periods, and environmental conditions are monitored with the aim of ensuring every dog remains healthy, engaged, and effective. We endeavour to take our welfare obligations as seriously as our security obligations.
Do you cover sites outside London?
Whilst headquartered in London, Britannic Security aims to operate K9 teams across the United Kingdom. Whether your site is in the South East, the Midlands, or further afield, please contact us to discuss potential coverage in your area.
